Brief History of the College

Gibson School Systems was founded in 2000 G.C. by Dr. Leea Gibson and Mr. Mohammed Aden. Originally named Gibson Youth Academy, the school took its name after Dr. Gibson’s American family arrived in Ethiopia in 1998 G.C. to support the educational well-being of young children. At the time of the Academy’s opening, Dr. Leea Gibson held a Master’s degree in Educational Administration. Driven by a commitment to provide quality education, she later pursued and earned her Doctorate Degree in Education.

Mr. Mohammed Aden, a successful Ethiopian businessman with ventures in multiple sectors, holds a Master’s degree in Economics. Beyond his business achievements, he is well known for his generosity, philanthropy, and contributions to various charitable causes.

Gibson Youth Academy began its journey in the Bole area with an initial enrollment of 330 students in 2000 G.C. Over the years, it has grown into the Gibson School Systems, which today operates six kindergartens, seven primary schools, and six high schools across Addis Ababa, in areas including Kolfe, Mekanisa, Sarbet, Bole Medanealem, Lafto, Bole 24, and CMC. The institution now serves thousands of students and provides employment to over 1,500 staff members, whose dedication has been instrumental to its success.

Gibson School Systems has been a pioneer in Ethiopia’s private education sector, introducing innovative programs such as the communication book, active student clubs, Cultural Appreciation Day, assistant teachers, emergency practice drills, after-school programs, character education initiatives, vacation enrichment programs, handwriting classes, composition packets, reading contests, coupon prize boxes, open house programs, line-up ceremony performances, and spelling bee competitions.

Guided by the belief that an education system must meet the social and economic needs of its generation, Gibson has consistently strived—in close collaboration with the school community—to uphold national standards while aligning with global expectations. This dedication is reflected in the achievements of its alumni, many of whom have gone on to become prominent professionals in major companies and industries both in Ethiopia and abroad. Hundreds of Gibson graduates successfully pass the university entrance national examinations each year and continue their studies at universities worldwide.

The school’s long history of excellence has laid a strong foundation for its expansion into higher education. The establishment of Gibson College is not a beginning from scratch but rather the continuation of a legacy rooted in quality, innovation, and service. The founders, Dr. Leea Gibson and Mr. Mohammed Aden, remain committed to extending Gibson School Systems’ impact for generations to come.
